Level 10 · Lesson 1 Raíz y desinencia
Stem and ending
Cada forma verbal es una raíz que significa y una desinencia que informa.
Every verb form is a stem that means something plus an ending that tells you who, when and how.
Ya lo sabes · You already know this
Desde el nivel 2 dices «hablo», «hablas», «hablamos» sin pensarlo, y desde el nivel 4 «hablé» y «hablaba». Nunca has dicho «hablo» queriendo decir «hablamos». Eso significa que ya manejas el sistema: la parte de delante te da el significado y la parte de atrás te da la persona y el tiempo. Este nivel solo le pone nombre a lo que tu boca ya hace.
You have been saying hablo, hablas, hablamos since level 2, and hablé, hablaba since level 4, and you have never once used one where you meant another. That is the system already working: the front of the word carries the meaning, the back of the word carries who and when. This level simply names what your mouth already does.
Las reglas · The rules
En «cantamos», «cant-» es la raíz: es lo que significa cantar y no comer. «-amos» es la desinencia: dice que hablamos de nosotros y que el tiempo es el presente. La raíz se obtiene quitando al infinitivo su terminación: cantar da «cant-», comer da «com-», vivir da «viv-». Un mismo verbo puede cambiar de raíz en algunas formas — «puedo» junto a «podemos» —, y de eso trataremos en este mismo nivel; la estructura, en cambio, no cambia nunca.
In cantamos, cant- is the stem: it is what makes the word mean sing rather than eat. -amos is the ending: it says we, and it says present. You get the stem by removing the infinitive ending: cantar leaves cant-, comer leaves com-, vivir leaves viv-. A verb may change its stem in some forms (puedo beside podemos), which comes later in this level; the architecture itself never changes.
La primera conjugación, la de -ar, es con mucho la mayor y la única viva: los verbos nuevos entran siempre por ella, como «chatear», «tuitear» o «escanear». La segunda, la de -er, es la más pequeña, pero contiene los verbos más usados: ser, tener, hacer, poder, querer. La tercera, la de -ir, se parece tanto a la segunda que las dos solo se distinguen en dos casillas del presente: «comemos» y «coméis» frente a «vivimos» y «vivís».
The first conjugation, -ar, is by far the largest and the only living one: new verbs always join it (chatear, tuitear, escanear). The second, -er, is the smallest but holds the most-used verbs: ser, tener, hacer, poder, querer. The third, -ir, is so close to the second that in the present they differ in only two slots: comemos and coméis against vivimos and vivís.
Compare cant-a-mos, com-e-mos, viv-i-mos: the stem changes, the ending -mos is identical, and only the middle vowel says which class you are in. That vowel comes back in the infinitive (cant-a-r) and the gerund (cant-a-ndo). It is not always visible: in canto the ending -o swallows it, and in the third conjugation the -i- surfaces only in the infinitive and in vivimos and vivís, since the other present slots borrow the -e- of the second.
