Level 6 · Lesson 18 Además, sin embargo
Besides, however
Los conectores que dan forma a lo que dices: además, sin embargo, por supuesto, así.
The discourse connectors that make speech flow instead of stopping at every full stop.
Escucha · Listen
¿Vienes o no vienes?
Are you going to Marta's party?
Well, I don't know. I have a lot of work. Besides, I live far away.
Sure, but it's her birthday.
Even so, if you go, I'll go with you.
So you're coming?
Of course. That way you don't arrive on your own.
I mean, so in the end you are coming.
Of course I am. It's late, so I'll call you later.
Explicación · Explanation
Estas palabras no añaden información: enseñan la forma de lo que dices. «Además» pone otra razón del mismo lado. «Sin embargo» da la vuelta al argumento. «Por supuesto» acepta con fuerza. «Así» dice de qué manera. Sin ellas, el español suena a lista.
Connectors carry no facts of their own; they tell your listener what to do with the next sentence. además piles one more reason on the same side of the scale (no time — and on top of that, no car). sin embargo turns the argument around, like a written 'however'. por supuesto is a wholehearted yes. así points at the manner or the result: así no llegas sola, 'that way you don't arrive alone'. A learner without them sounds like a list of true statements; a learner with them sounds like someone making a case.
«Pero» une dos frases dentro de una sola: «Es tarde, pero voy». «Sin embargo» abre una frase nueva y lleva coma detrás: «Es tarde. Sin embargo, voy». «Además» va igual, al principio y con coma.
This is the practical difference that trips people up. pero is a conjunction: it welds two clauses inside one sentence and never takes a comma after it. sin embargo is an adverb: it normally opens a new sentence, after a full stop or a semicolon, and it is followed by a comma. Es caro; sin embargo, lo compro. además behaves the same way — head of the sentence, comma after — and both are a step more formal than the plain pero and y.
Dos más para hablar seguido. «Así que» saca la consecuencia: «Es tarde, así que me voy». «O sea» repite la idea con otras palabras: «Llego el viernes, o sea, mañana». Y «por supuesto que sí» es un sí muy claro.
Two extras that buy you a lot of fluency. así que draws the conclusion — the everyday 'so' of spoken Spanish: No contestó, así que le escribí otra vez. o sea reformulates what you just said, the way English says 'I mean' or 'that is'; it is very frequent in speech and perfectly correct, though a speaker who says it every ten seconds sounds like a teenager. And por supuesto stands alone as an answer, or takes a que: por supuesto que sí, por supuesto que no.

Ponlo en práctica · Use it
Di en voz alta por qué no vas a una fiesta, en cuatro frases: una razón, otra con «además», una vuelta con «sin embargo» y el final con «así que». Después contesta a un favor con «por supuesto».
Build a small argument out loud. Sentence one: your reason for not going. Sentence two: another reason, opened with Además. Sentence three: the turn — Sin embargo, plus the thing that pulls the other way. Sentence four: your decision, introduced by así que. Then say por supuesto out loud twice, once alone and once as por supuesto que sí. Four connectors is all it takes for your Spanish to stop sounding like separate sentences.
