Los treinta de Marta
Happy birthday, Marta! This is for you.
A present! You shouldn't have. Thank you so much.
Open it now. How old are you turning?
I'm turning thirty. The party is at Luis's place, at nine.
Happy birthday, Marta! Shall we toast now?
Yes, a toast. To Marta and to turning thirty!
Cheers!
And many happy returns!
For age in general Spanish uses tener: tengo treinta años. But on the day itself the verb is cumplir, 'to complete': cumplo treinta, ¿cuántos años cumples?, mi hija cumple diez el martes. The noun cumpleaños is a compound of cumple and años, so it already ends in s and never changes: un cumpleaños, dos cumpleaños, and it is masculine. The greeting is ¡feliz cumpleaños! — feliz, not felices, because it agrees with that singular noun. Spain then keeps two congratulations apart: ¡felicidades! belongs to the calendar (birthdays, saint's days, Christmas), while ¡enhorabuena! belongs to achievement — a new job, a passed exam, a wedding. Latin America simplifies: ¡felicitaciones! covers both. All of them are exclamations, so both marks are obligatory in writing.
Invitar tiene dos sentidos. «Te invito a mi fiesta» es una invitación. «Te invito», solo, quiere decir que pagas tú. Para aceptar: «¡claro que sí!», «allí estaré». Para decir que no: «no puedo, lo siento, tengo trabajo». Y el verbo del regalo es regalar: le regalé un libro a mi hermano.
invitar does double duty. With a place it invites: te invito a mi fiesta, te invito a cenar. On its own, te invito means the bill is yours — the ordinary way to pay for a friend's coffee. Accept with ¡claro que sí! or allí estaré; decline with a reason, because a bare no is blunt: no puedo, lo siento, tengo trabajo. The gift verb is regalar, and it takes the clitic you learnt in level 5: le regalé un libro a mi hermano, se lo regalé el sábado.
El brindis es corto: levantas la copa y dices «¡salud!». También «¡chinchín!», coloquial, o el brindis largo «¡salud, dinero y amor!». La preposición por dice a quién va dedicado: brindo por ti, un brindis por los novios. Y la fórmula del cumpleaños, «¡que cumplas muchos más!», se aprende entera: su gramática llega en el nivel 11.
Raise the glass and say ¡salud! — that is the whole ritual. ¡Chinchín! imitates the clink and is playful; the long version is ¡salud, dinero y amor! Say who you are drinking to with por: brindo por ti, un brindis por los novios. One set phrase here contains a verb form you have not met: ¡que cumplas muchos más!, 'many happy returns'. Learn it whole for now, as a block — the last lesson of this level collects a few more of the same shape, and the subjunctive that builds them all arrives in level 11.

Invita a alguien en voz alta: «Te invito a mi fiesta, el sábado a las nueve». Contesta tú mismo que sí y que no: «¡Claro que sí!» y «No puedo, lo siento». Después felicita a tres personas: a una por su cumpleaños, a otra por su trabajo nuevo, y a la tercera con una copa en la mano.
Say the whole evening out loud. Invite someone with a day and an hour; accept once with ¡claro que sí, allí estaré! and decline once with a reason. Then hand over a present (esto es para ti), congratulate a birthday with ¡felicidades! and a new job with ¡enhorabuena!, and close by raising your glass: un brindis por todos — ¡salud!
