The journey
Viajar: billetes, maletas y preguntar el camino.
Travel: tickets, luggage and asking for directions.
Escucha · Listen
En la estación
Good morning. A ticket to Seville, please.
One way or return?
Return. I come back on Sunday.
That is forty euros. The train leaves from platform three.
Thank you. Tomorrow I travel to Mexico. Is there a bus to the airport?
Every half hour, right across the way. It takes twenty minutes.
Excuse me, one more thing: where do I leave my suitcase?
Go straight on and turn left. It is at the far end. Have a good trip!
The ticket has three names and they are regional, so learn all three and use the local one: billete in Spain, boleto in Mexico and much of Latin America, pasaje for a plane or boat fare. The types are un billete de ida (one way) and un billete de ida y vuelta (return, or round-trip). Spain says sacar un billete for buying one; America says comprar el boleto. The price is la tarifa, and the ticket office is la taquilla in Spain, la boletería in much of America.
una maleta is one suitcase; el equipaje is the luggage as a whole, and it is singular in Spanish even when there are four bags. To pack is hacer la maleta, literally 'to make the suitcase' — hoy hago la maleta, mañana salgo. At the airport, Spain says facturar el equipaje for checking bags in; in Latin America you will hear chequear or documentar el equipaje instead. What stays with you is el equipaje de mano.
Two openers cover almost every case: perdone, ¿para ir a...? and ¿cómo se va a...? — both impersonal, so you never have to choose a verb form. The answers come back short: siga todo recto (Spain) or siga derecho (America), gire a la derecha or doble a la derecha, está a cinco minutos, queda cerca — that last verb, quedar for location, is especially common in America. One warning worth its own line: in Spain you coger el tren, but coger is obscene in much of Latin America, so say tomar el tren and you are safe everywhere. To miss it is perder el tren.

Ponlo en práctica · Use it
Play both parts out loud. First buy a ticket: name the city, choose ida or ida y vuelta, ask the price. Then ask the way to three places you can see from your window, and answer yourself with siga todo recto, gire a la derecha, está a cinco minutos. Finish by packing an imaginary bag: mañana hago la maleta y tomo el tren de las ocho.
