You were five. I don't forget that summer.
Well, I've forgotten the name of the place.
Abuela — Se llamaba Nerja. Tengo buena memoria para el pasado.
It was called Nerja. I have a good memory for the past.

This is the point of the lesson, and it is a single fact: recordar takes its object bare. Recuerdo aquel día. Recuerdo tu nombre. And with a pronoun from level 5, la recuerdo bien. Never put de after recordar — recordar de is not Spanish. The verb is an o-to-ue type: recuerdo, recuerdas, recuerda, recordamos, recuerdan (in Spain also recordáis), with the diphthong everywhere except nosotros.

Spanish keeps a second verb for the same idea, and this one does take de: acordarse de, a reflexive verb of the kind you met with levantarse. Me acuerdo de aquel día means exactly what recuerdo aquel día means; ¿te acuerdas de mí? is the everyday way to ask. Pick either, but never mix them into recordarse de. And recordar has a second job — to remind: esta foto me recuerda a mamá, te recuerdo que hoy es martes.

Forgetting comes in three shapes and all three are standard. olvidé las llaves is the plain one. me olvidé de las llaves is the reflexive one, with de. se me olvidaron las llaves is the one people actually say — it quietly puts the blame on the keys, and the verb agrees with them: se me olvidó el libro but se me olvidaron los libros. The clitics sit in the fixed order you learnt earlier in this level: se first, then me — never me se.

Ponlo en práctica · Use it

Find an old photo and describe it out loud with all four patterns: recuerdo aquel día (bare object), me acuerdo de esa casa (with de), olvidé el nombre del lugar, and se me olvidaron las fechas. Then tell someone one real memory from your childhood. If you catch yourself saying recuerdo de, stop and choose: either drop the de or switch to me acuerdo.
