She answered me: 'It changes in September'.

Did she explain why to you?

And nothing else?

What good news!

Explicación · Explanation

«Preguntar» es hacer una pregunta: «Le pregunté la hora». «Preguntar por» es pedir noticias de algo o de alguien: «Pregunté por el horario», «Preguntó por ti».

Keep preguntar apart from pedir. preguntar asks a question and wants words back; pedir asks for a thing and wants the thing. Pedí un café means you will get a coffee; Pregunté por un café means you wanted news of one. And preguntar por alguien is the warm phrase for asking after a person: Tu madre preguntó por ti.

«Responder» contesta a la pregunta, «explicar» da las razones y «añadir» dice una cosa más. La persona que escucha va en dativo: «me respondió», «te lo explicó», «se lo expliqué a Ana».

These three carry the shape of a conversation. responder answers (responder a una pregunta), explicar gives the reasons, and añadir tacks on one more remark at the end. All three take an indirect object for the listener, so the clitics you learned in lessons 1 to 10 come back in force: me respondió, te lo explicó, se lo expliqué a Ana.

En pasado, la tercera persona lleva tilde: preguntó, respondió, explicó, añadió. En primera persona, «explicar» cambia la escritura: expliqué.

Notice the tilde on that final syllable: pregunta is the present, preguntó is the past, and only the tilde tells them apart — so it is never optional. In the yo form, explicar writes qu to keep its k sound: expliqué, never explicé. The others are plain: pregunté, respondí, añadí. And when you tell a story, the subject usually follows the verb of speech: 'No lo sé' —respondió Ana.

Cuenta en voz alta una conversación de ayer con estos cuatro verbos: le pregunté por el precio; me respondió: «Es muy barato»; después me explicó la razón; y al final añadió una cosa más.

Retell one real exchange from yesterday out loud, in the past, using all four verbs in order: you asked, the other person answered, then explained, then added something. Quote their exact words rather than reshaping them — the next lesson takes care of the version that starts dijo que.
