Explicación · Explanation

«Donde» une una frase con un lugar: «el sitio donde comimos», «el pueblo donde nació». Es lo mismo que «en el que», pero más corto y más natural al hablar.

donde is the place relative, and it never changes form. el sitio donde comimos and el sitio en el que comimos say exactly the same thing; donde is what people actually say. It can also stand with no antecedent at all: Vivo donde trabajo, 'I live where I work'. With a verb of movement and an antecedent, Spanish prefers adonde, also written a donde: la playa adonde vamos.

«Como» habla de la manera: «Lo hizo como le enseñaron». Con la palabra «manera» o «modo» delante, valen las dos formas: «la manera como lo hizo» y «la manera en que lo hizo».

como is the manner relative — 'the way in which'. Lo hizo como le enseñaron means 'he did it the way they taught him'. After manera or modo both la manera como and la manera en que are correct and common. This is the same little word you already use for comparisons (trabaja como un profesional, 'he works like a professional'); the sense is one and the same: matching a model.

Con tilde son preguntas: «¿Dónde vives?», «¿Cómo lo hiciste?». Sin tilde son relativos: «el sitio donde vives», «la manera como lo hiciste».

Back in level 1 you met dónde and cómo with their tildes. Keep them: the tilde is the mark of a question, and it stays even when the question hides inside another sentence — No sé dónde vive, Pregúntale cómo se llama. The relatives of this lesson are the same words stripped of the tilde, because they ask nothing. Hear the difference: ¿Cómo se llama el sitio donde comimos? holds both in one breath.

Describe three places out loud, each with donde, and then one habit with como — the way someone taught you, the way you were brought up.
