El libro de Marta
Luis, do you have Marta's book?
Yes, I have it here. Shall I give it to you?
Yes, give it to me, please.
Here it is. Are you going to give it back to her today?
I'm going to hand it to her this afternoon.
Sorry, I didn't hear you properly. Can you say it again?
I'm handing it to her this afternoon. Now I'm going to put it away.
Very good. And this old book — take it off the table.
Explicación · Explanation
Hasta ahora el pronombre iba siempre delante del verbo conjugado. Hay tres formas del verbo que lo llevan detrás, pegado y en la misma palabra: el infinitivo (quiero guardarlo), el gerundio, la forma en -ndo (estoy guardándolo) y el imperativo afirmativo, el de ¡habla! y ¡come! (dámelo, quítalo, repítelo).
Until now every unstressed pronoun stood in front of the conjugated verb. Three forms of the verb take it behind instead, written joined to the verb as one word: the infinitive (quiero guardarlo, sin devolvérselo), the gerund — the -ndo form (estoy guardándolo) — and the affirmative imperative you met in level 2 (dámelo, quítalo, repítelo, guárdalo). Everywhere else the pronoun stays in front, exactly as before.
Con dos verbos juntos (querer más infinitivo, ir a más infinitivo, estar más gerundio) puedes elegir: «Voy a entregárselo» o «Se lo voy a entregar». Las dos son correctas y las dos se oyen a diario. Con el imperativo afirmativo no hay elección: el pronombre va detrás.
When two verbs work as a team — querer + infinitive, ir a + infinitive, estar + gerund — you may put the pronouns at either end of the group: Voy a entregárselo or Se lo voy a entregar; Estoy guardándolo or Lo estoy guardando. Both are correct, both are everyday. With the affirmative imperative there is no choice at all: the pronoun goes behind, welded on. Dámelo, never me lo da as an order.
Al pegar el pronombre, la palabra crece pero el acento no se mueve: por eso muchas veces hay que escribir tilde. Da más me más lo da dámelo; quita más lo da quítalo; repite más lo da repítelo; entregar más se más lo da entregárselo. El gerundio con pronombre siempre lleva tilde: guardándolo. Con dos pronombres, casi siempre también.
Attaching the pronoun makes the word longer, but the stress stays on the syllable it was already on — so a written tilde is often needed to hold it there. da + me + lo gives dámelo; quita + lo gives quítalo; repite + lo gives repítelo; guarda + lo gives guárdalo; entregar + se + lo gives entregárselo. A gerund with any pronoun always takes one (guardándolo), and two attached pronouns almost always force one. One pronoun on an infinitive usually needs none: guardarlo, repetirlo. Level 8 turns all this into a single rule.

Ponlo en práctica · Use it
Da cuatro órdenes en voz alta, con el pronombre pegado: «Dámelo», «Guárdalo», «Quítalo de la mesa», «Repítelo, por favor». Después di la misma idea con dos verbos: «Voy a guardarlo» y «Lo voy a guardar».
Give four orders out loud, each with the pronoun riding on the end: Dámelo. Guárdalo. Quítalo de la mesa. Repítelo, por favor. Listen for the stress staying put while the word gets longer. Then say the same idea twice with a two-verb group — Voy a guardarlo and Lo voy a guardar — and prove to yourself that Spanish really does let you choose.
