Antes de salir

Ana — Luis, ¿vas a salir ahora?
Luis, are you going out now?
Luis — Sí, salgo para el mercado. Iré por la calle nueva.
Yes, I'm off to the market. I'll go along the new street.
Ana — ¿Comprarás pan para la cena?
Will you buy bread for dinner?
Luis — Sí. Y también un libro para mi hermana.
Yes. And a book for my sister too.
Did you pay a lot for yesterday's book?
Luis — Muy poco. Gracias por el café de esta mañana.
Very little. Thanks for the coffee this morning.
Ana — De nada. Estaré en casa hasta la noche.
You're welcome. I'll be at home until tonight.
Luis — Volveré pronto. ¡Hasta luego!
I'll be back soon. See you later!

Think of por as the backward-looking preposition — it answers why, which way, and in exchange for what. And the one you have been using since level 2 without noticing — por la mañana, por la tarde, por la noche.

para is the forward-looking preposition — it answers what for, for whom, and by when. Destination, where you set off towards: salgo para el mercado. One sentence holds the whole contrast — Compré el libro por diez pesos para mi hermana: por is what it cost, para is who gets it.

Two more prepositions close the picture. desde is the starting point and hasta the finishing point, both in space (desde Madrid hasta Lima, fui hasta la plaza) and in time (desde ayer, hasta la noche). desde also gives you 'since': trabajo aquí desde el año pasado. And hasta luego, the very first goodbye you learned, is literally 'up to the moment we meet again'.

Ponlo en práctica · Use it

— and as you say each one, ask yourself whether you are looking back at a reason or forward to a goal. Then close the day with one line that uses both ends of the line: Trabajo desde la mañana hasta la noche.
