Una invitación
Mr Ruiz, could I speak with you now?
Yes, madam. Please do.
I'd like to invite your family to our house.
Thank you very much. We'd be delighted to come.
Would you prefer next week?
Yes, next week would be very good.
I wouldn't want to impose. Would you allow me to invite your sister as well?
Yes, madam. I'd say she would come very gladly.
If you can build the future, you already have the conditional: same whole infinitive, different endings — -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían, one set for all three conjugations. Every single form carries a tilde, because the i and the a are two syllables and the stress falls on that i. And the shortened stems are exactly the ones from the last lesson: diría, haría, pondría, tendría, saldría, vendría, podría, sabría, querría, habría.
The first job of the conditional is to take the edge off a request. The present is blunt: ¿Puede usted abrir la ventana? Quiero hablar con usted. The conditional is courteous: ¿Podría usted abrir la ventana? Querría hablar con usted. ¿Preferiría…? and ¿Permitiría…? work the same way, and in a shop, an office or a stranger's house they are what an adult sounds like.
The second job is to soften an opinion. Yo diría que… is 'I'd say…' — the same hedge English uses, and the safest way to disagree with someone. The conditional also paints what is only imagined: Con más días, viajaría a Chile. Note that preferir changes e to ie in the present (prefiero, prefieres, prefiere) but is perfectly regular here: preferiría.

Práctica · Practice
Ponlo en práctica · Use it
Say three requests twice each — first blunt in the present, then courteous in the conditional — and listen to the difference the two syllables make. Then finish two sentences aloud: Yo diría que… (an opinion you hold) and Con más días, yo… (something you would do with more time).
