Two words share this job, and they divide it cleanly. estar tells you where a known thing is: El libro está en la mesa. hay announces that something is there at all, and what follows it is new and indefinite: En la mesa hay un libro.

en is the workhorse of place and covers English in, on and at all at once: en la casa, en Madrid, en la mesa — that last one really does mean on the table. sobre is narrower, meaning on top of, and like en it is a preposition on its own: sobre la mesa, sobre la cama. Neither of them takes anything extra.

The other three are different: they are not prepositions by themselves, so when a noun follows they need de to attach it — debajo de la mesa, detrás de la puerta, cerca de la plaza. Drop the noun and the de goes with it: Está debajo. Vivo cerca. One more piece of housekeeping: de and el fuse into del, always. So it is debajo del coche and cerca del parque, and de el is never written.
