Explicación · Explanation

El adjetivo en -o tiene cuatro formas y concuerda con su sustantivo: un niño alto, una niña alta, unos niños altos, unas niñas altas.

An adjective is not a fixed word in Spanish: it copies the gender and number of the noun it describes. Adjectives ending in -o have four forms — alto, alta, altos, altas — and every one of them must match: un niño alto, una niña alta, unos niños altos, unas niñas altas. The same for pequeño and bajo. If you change the noun, you change the adjective with it.

«Grande» termina en -e y tiene una sola forma para el masculino y el femenino: un libro grande, una casa grande. En plural, grandes.

Adjectives that end in -e, like grande, have nothing to change for gender: un libro grande, una casa grande. They still mark the plural — libros grandes, casas grandes. So grande has two forms where alto has four, and that is the whole difference.

En español el adjetivo va normalmente detrás del sustantivo: una casa pequeña, una ciudad grande, un hombre alto.

Word order is the habit English speakers have to unlearn. Spanish puts the adjective after the noun as its default: una casa pequeña, una ciudad grande, un hombre alto — never 'una pequeña casa' in ordinary description. A few adjectives do move in front, and the next lesson shows the commonest ones; for now, describe from the back.

Describe tu habitación en voz alta: «Mi habitación es pequeña», «La mesa es grande», «Las sillas son bajas», «Mi hermano es alto».

Describe four things around you out loud, one sentence each, and make the adjective agree every time: a masculine singular, a feminine singular, a masculine plural, a feminine plural. Put the adjective after the noun inside a phrase (una mesa grande) and after ser when it is the whole point (La mesa es grande).
