Level 3 · Lesson 12

Este y ese
This and that

Tres distancias: este aquí, ese ahí, aquel allí.

Spanish has three degrees of pointing, not two.

Escucha · Listen

En la librería

Ana — Perdón, ¿cuánto cuesta este libro?
Excuse me, how much is this book?
Vendedor — Ese libro cuesta diez euros.
That book — the one in your hand — costs ten euros.
Ana — ¿Y aquel libro de la ventana?
And that book over there in the window?
Vendedor — Aquel es un diccionario. Cuesta mucho.
That one over there is a dictionary. It costs a lot.
Ana — ¿Y esto? ¿Qué es?
And this? What is it?
Vendedor — Esto es un mapa de la ciudad.
This is a map of the city.
Ana — Bien. Compro este libro y ese mapa.
Good. I'll take this book and that map.
Vendedor — Gracias. Aquí está el mapa.
Thank you. Here is the map.

Explicación · Explanation

El español señala tres distancias. «Este» está aquí, conmigo. «Ese» está ahí, con la persona que escucha. «Aquel» está allí, lejos de los dos.

English points twice — this and that. Spanish points three times, and the middle one is the useful surprise. este is by me, ese is by you, aquel is away from us both. Ana holds the book she calls este; the shop assistant calls the very same book ese. Nothing has moved: the word tracks who is near it.

Concuerdan con el sustantivo: este libro, esta casa, estos libros, estas casas; ese mapa, esa calle; aquel parque, aquella ciudad, aquellos hombres, aquellas mujeres.

Each of the three has four forms and agrees with the noun exactly as an adjective does: este libro / esta casa / estos libros / estas casas; ese mapa / esa calle / esos mapas / esas calles; aquel parque / aquella ciudad / aquellos parques / aquellas ciudades. They can also stand alone with the noun understood — Compro este, Aquella es de mi abuela.

«Esto», «eso» y «aquello» son neutros: no tienen plural y nunca van delante de un sustantivo. Sirven para una cosa sin nombre o para toda una situación: ¿Qué es esto?

Then there is a fourth, quieter set: the neuters esto, eso and aquello. They never precede a noun and have no plural, because there is no neuter noun in Spanish. Use them for a thing you cannot yet name — ¿Qué es esto? — or for a whole situation: Eso es verdad. Once the thing has a name, the noun's own gender takes over: Esto es un mapa, but Este mapa es de la ciudad. One spelling note: since the Ortografía of 2010, no demonstrative carries a tilde, even standing alone.

Práctica · Practice

Un libro en tu mano, no en la mía. Yo digo: A book in your hand, not mine. I say:
¿Qué es ________? — Es un mapa. What is this? — It's a map.
El femenino singular de «aquel» es: The feminine singular of aquel is:
Ordenar la frase. Arrange the words: 'That house over there is my grandmother's.'
Unir cada palabra con su distancia. Match each word with its distance.

Ponlo en práctica · Use it

Señala tres cosas de tu habitación y di en voz alta: «Este libro es de…», «Esa mesa está ahí», «Aquella ventana es de la cocina».

Point at three real objects at three real distances and name them out loud, one with este, one with ese, one with aquel. Then hold up something a friend cannot name and ask ¿Qué es esto? — you have just used all four sets in one breath.
