Hermanos, abuelos, tíos y primos: ¿cuántos hermanos tienes?
The wider family, and how to ask how many brothers and sisters someone has.

And the grandparents? What are they called?
The grandfather is called Pedro and the grandmother is called Rosa.

Five cousins! And I have three.

El hermano y la hermana. El abuelo y la abuela. El tío y la tía. El primo y la prima.
The wider family comes in pairs, one masculine and one feminine, and the ending does the work: -o for the man, -a for the woman. Learn them two by two — hermano/hermana, abuelo/abuela, tío/tía, primo/prima — and you have eight words for the price of four.
Los hermanos son el hermano y la hermana. Los abuelos son el abuelo y la abuela. Los tíos, los primos: igual.
The same masculine plural you met with los padres covers each pair: los hermanos means brothers and sisters together, los abuelos means both grandparents, los tíos an uncle and an aunt, los primos a mixed set of cousins. So ¿cuántos hermanos tienes? asks about sisters too — and no tengo hermanos, in the plural, is how you say you are an only child.
¿Cuántos hermanos tienes? ¿Cuántas hermanas tienes? Tengo dos hermanos y una hermana.
cuánto asks how many, and it changes to match what it counts: ¿cuántos hermanos? but ¿cuántas hermanas? It carries a tilde because it is a question word, exactly like qué, quién and dónde from level 1. The answer almost always comes back with tener: tengo dos hermanos.

Habla en voz alta de la familia. «Tengo… hermanos». «El abuelo se llama…». «La tía se llama…». Y pregunta a un amigo: «¿Cuántos hermanos tienes? ¿Cuántos primos tienes?».
Count your family out loud: how many brothers and sisters, how many cousins, and the names of the grandparents you know. Then put the question to someone else — ¿cuántos hermanos tienes? — and listen for the plural in the answer, because tengo dos hermanos may well mean one brother and one sister.
