Escucha · Listen
La familia de Ana
Luis, the family is here. Carmen is the mother.
Pleased to meet you, Carmen.
And Pedro is the father.
Good afternoon, Pedro.
Pedro and Carmen are the parents. They have two children.
Two children?
Yes: a son and a daughter. I am the daughter.
What a family!
Explicación · Explanation
La familia: el padre, la madre, el hijo, la hija. El padre y el hijo van con el. La madre y la hija van con la.
Four words carry the close family. padre and hijo are masculine and take el; madre and hija are feminine and take la. Learn each one with its article from the start — el padre, la madre — and the gender never has to be relearned.
Los padres son el padre y la madre. Los hijos son el hijo y la hija. Los amigos son Ana y Luis.
Here is a habit of Spanish that surprises English speakers: a masculine plural covers a mixed group. los padres is not 'the fathers' but 'the parents'; los hijos is 'the children', sons and daughters together; los amigos can be Ana and Luis. Only an all-female group takes the feminine — las hijas is daughters and nobody else.
Con de: la madre de Ana, el hijo de Carmen, la familia de Luis.
To say whose, Spanish joins the two nouns with de and puts the owner second: la madre de Ana is Ana's mother. There is no apostrophe-s in Spanish, and no way to reverse the order — de does all of that work on its own.

Habla de la familia, en voz alta. «El padre se llama…». «La madre se llama…». «Los padres son… y…». Y con de: «La madre de… es…».
Name your own close family out loud: the father, the mother, the children, one sentence each with se llama. Then link two of them with de — la madre de Ana es Carmen — and say four such sentences before you stop. Possessive words like mi and tu are coming in two lessons; de will carry you until then.
