Tener: tengo, tienes, tiene, tenemos, tenéis, tienen. La e cambia a ie. Con yo: tengo.

tener stacks two irregularities you already know. The e→ie stem change of querer and poder (level 2) gives tienes, tiene, tienen; the -go yo form of hacer and salir gives tengo. And as always the change skips nosotros and vosotros, which keep the plain e: tenemos, tenéis.

Tener dice qué tienes: tengo una casa, tienes un libro, tenemos agua. Ana tiene una tienda.

The everyday job of tener is possession, and there it behaves just like English 'have': tengo una casa. Remember that Spanish drops the subject pronoun, since tengo already says who. And the object normally takes un or una: tengo un libro.

El hambre, la sed, el frío, el calor y el sueño no van con ser o estar. Van con tener: tengo hambre, tengo sed, tengo frío, tengo calor, tengo sueño. Con mucho: tengo mucho frío, tengo mucha hambre.

Where English says 'I am hungry', Spanish says 'I have hunger'. These five sensations are nouns you carry, not adjectives you are: tengo hambre, tengo sed, tengo frío, tengo calor, tengo sueño. Never soy hambre or estoy frío for this. To intensify, add mucho or mucha — mucho frío, mucho calor, mucho sueño, but mucha hambre and mucha sed, which are feminine.
