Explicación · Explanation

Tres comidas cada día: el desayuno por la mañana, el almuerzo al mediodía, la cena por la noche. Cada comida va con un verbo: desayuno, almuerzo, ceno.

Three meals, three nouns, three verbs — and the verbs are built straight from the nouns: desayunar (desayuno, desayunas, desayuna), almorzar (almuerzo, almuerzas, almuerza) and cenar (ceno, cenas, cena). Almorzar is one of the o‑ue verbs of lesson 5, so the noun el almuerzo and the verb form yo almuerzo look exactly alike; the little word in front tells you which one you are hearing.

En España la comida principal es la comida, a las dos o a las tres de la tarde, y la cena es a las nueve o a las diez. En América la comida principal se llama el almuerzo, a la una o a las dos, y la cena es temprano.

Meal names are regional, so learn both. In Spain the big meal of the day is la comida, eaten at two or three, and dinner comes very late. In most of Spanish America that midday meal is el almuerzo, eaten at one or two, with dinner around seven or eight; in Mexico people say la comida for it, just as in Spain. A las dos means 'at two o'clock' — take it as a fixed phrase for now.

La fruta y el arroz: dos comidas de todos los días. Como fruta por la mañana y arroz al mediodía.

Two everyday foods to carry into the vocabulary: la fruta, fruit (Spanish uses the singular where English often says 'fruits'), and el arroz, rice — the base of a Valencian paella, a Cuban plate of arroz con frijoles and a Peruvian arroz chaufa alike. Al mediodía means at midday.

Ponlo en práctica · Use it

Ahora hablas tú. Di tus tres comidas de hoy en voz alta: «Desayuno…», «Almuerzo…», «Ceno…». Y pregunta a un amigo: «¿Qué desayunas?».

Say your own day out loud in three sentences — desayuno pan y café, almuerzo arroz y fruta, ceno pan y leche — using only words you already have. Then ask a friend ¿qué desayunas? and listen for the meal name they choose: it will tell you which side of the Atlantic their Spanish comes from.
