Explicación · Explanation

En la tienda compramos y pagamos: compro pan, pago dos euros. Comprar y pagar son verbos en -ar.

Both of today's verbs are plain -ar verbs from lesson 1 of this level, so you already know all six forms: compro, compras, compra, compramos, compráis, compran — and pago, pagas, paga, pagamos, pagáis, pagan. La tienda is the shop on the corner; el mercado of lesson 4 is the market, and a large one is un supermercado.

Para preguntar el precio: ¿Cuánto es? o ¿Cuánto cuesta el pan? Con dos cosas o más: ¿Cuánto cuestan?

¿Cuánto es? asks for the total to pay; ¿cuánto cuesta…? asks the price of one thing and ¿cuánto cuestan…? the price of several. Costar is another o‑ue verb like poder, so the stem breaks in two: cuesta, cuestan. Cuánto takes a tilde because it is asking a question — the same tilde as qué, quién, dónde and cuándo.

Caro y barato: el café es caro, el pan es barato.

caro means expensive, barato cheap, and both follow es: el café es caro, el pan es barato. Like every Spanish adjective they change their ending to match the noun — una mesa cara, unas sillas baratas — which is level 3's work; for now keep them just as you hear them here. The money changes with the country: euros in Spain, pesos in Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Chile, soles in Peru.

Ponlo en práctica · Use it

Ahora hablas tú. En la tienda: «Buenos días. Quiero comprar pan, por favor. ¿Cuánto cuesta?». Y al final: «Pago ahora. Gracias, hasta luego».

Play both parts of the dialogue out loud, swapping in words you already know — pan, café, leche, agua, fruta, arroz, una lámpara, una silla. Ask the price of each one with ¿cuánto cuesta…?, answer with a number from one to ten, and judge it out loud: es caro or es barato.
