Comemos la comida y bebemos la bebida. Comemos pan; bebemos leche, agua y café.

Two umbrella words open the topic: la comida for anything you eat (it also means a meal, and in Spain the midday meal), la bebida for anything you drink. Under them sit the four everyday items of this lesson — el pan, la leche, el agua, el café — and the two verbs you already have: como pan, bebo leche.

«Agua» es una palabra femenina, pero en singular decimos el agua. En plural: las aguas.

agua is feminine, and yet the singular takes el: el agua. Spanish does this with every feminine noun beginning with a stressed a- sound (el agua, el aula), for the plain reason that la agua is awkward to say. The word never changes gender: you still say el agua fría with a feminine adjective, and the plural is las aguas. Level 3 lays out the article system in full.

«Café» es la bebida y también el lugar: bebo un café en el café.

café names both the drink and the place you drink it in, exactly as English 'coffee' and 'cafe' split the job — bebo un café en el café. Note the tilde on the last syllable: ca-FÉ. And café con leche, coffee with hot milk, is breakfast from Madrid to Buenos Aires.
