Explicación · Explanation

El día tiene tres partes: la mañana, la tarde y la noche. Y con cada parte va un saludo: buenos días, buenas tardes, buenas noches.

Spanish cuts the day into three, not two: la mañana up to the midday meal, la tarde from then until it goes dark, la noche after that. Those are exactly the three greetings of your very first lesson, so the greeting tells you which part of the day the speaker thinks you are in. To say when something happens, put por in front: por la mañana, por la tarde, por la noche.

«Mañana» tiene dos sentidos: la mañana del día, y el día que viene. «Mañana por la mañana» es normal en español.

With an article, la mañana is the morning; on its own, mañana is tomorrow. Both live happily in one sentence: mañana por la mañana, 'tomorrow in the morning'. Tarde plays the same double game — la tarde is the afternoon, but plain tarde means 'late': llego tarde, 'I arrive late'.

Con una hora usamos «de»: a las nueve de la mañana, a las diez de la noche.

Once you name an hour, por gives way to de: a las nueve de la mañana, a las diez de la noche. One regional note, since both are correct: por la mañana is the general and peninsular form, while en la mañana is very common across Latin America. Use either, and expect to hear both.
