Seis, siete, ocho, nueve, diez. Estos números no llevan tilde y no cambian: seis amigos, seis amigas.
With these five you can count to ten. None of them takes a tilde, and none of them changes for gender — seis amigos and seis amigas are both simply seis. Only uno did that, back in the last lesson. Watch the spelling of two of them: seis ends in -s, and diez ends in -z.
Para un teléfono usamos los números del cero al nueve, uno a uno: seis, ocho, nueve, siete, cero, cuatro…
A teléfono here is a phone number, and the safest way to give one anywhere in the Spanish-speaking world is digit by digit, from cero to nueve. Ten is not a digit, so diez never appears inside a number read this way. Native speakers often group the digits into pairs when they say a number fast; one at a time is slower, and it is always understood.
Con números decimos también un día de trabajo: «Trabajo de nueve a seis».
The same numbers give you a working day: trabajo de nueve a seis, 'I work from nine to six'. The pattern de … a … carries you from one point to another and needs nothing else. Telling the full time of day — las nueve y media — waits until you have the bigger numbers.
