Explicación · Explanation

El verbo «ser» dice quién es una persona: yo soy, tú eres, usted es. Con un nombre: «Soy Ana». Con una profesión: «Soy estudiante».

ser is the identity verb — who or what someone is. Three forms for now: yo soy, tú eres, usted es. Spanish uses no word for 'a' in front of a role: soy estudiante, never 'soy un estudiante'. And estudiante is the same word for a man and for a woman.

El pronombre no es obligatorio. «Soy estudiante» ya dice yo. Con «yo soy estudiante» el contraste es fuerte: yo sí, otra persona no.

The verb ending already names the person, so the pronoun is optional and usually left out. Put yo or tú back in when you want contrast or emphasis — yo soy Diego, said while pointing at yourself, or ¿y tú? handing the question over. Dropping the pronoun is the neutral, natural choice.

«Tú» va con un amigo. «Usted» va con respeto. Sorpresa: usted usa la forma de él y de ella — usted es, no «usted eres».

tú for friends and family, usted for strangers, older people and work. The surprise is grammatical: usted is a third person, so it takes the same form as él and ella — usted es, él es, ella es (those two pronouns arrive in the next lesson). In Argentina, Uruguay and much of Central America vos replaces tú (vos sos); level 6 lays all three side by side.

Ahora hablas tú, en voz alta: «Me llamo … Soy estudiante». Después, la pregunta a un amigo: «¿Tú eres estudiante?». Y con respeto: «¿Usted es la señora …?».

Introduce yourself out loud with name plus role — soy estudiante, or another word you know. Then ask the same question twice, once with tú eres and once with usted es, and feel the difference. Remember to drop the pronoun unless you want the emphasis.
