Explicación · Explanation
Cuatro palabras de cortesía: «por favor» con una petición, «gracias» con un favor, «de nada» con un gracias, «perdón» con un error.
These four carry most of everyday politeness. por favor goes at the end of a request; gracias thanks; de nada answers gracias (literally 'of nothing'); perdón apologises. perdón also opens a conversation with a stranger, exactly like English 'excuse me' — Ana uses it both ways in the dialogue.
«Sí» y «no» son la respuesta corta. «No, no» con dos palabras no es descortés: es normal.
sí carries a tilde, which keeps it apart from si, 'if' — a distinction level 8 will formalise. Doubling the answer (no, no / sí, sí) is ordinary spoken Spanish and sounds friendly rather than blunt, especially when you are correcting someone.
«Mucho gusto» va con una persona nueva. La otra persona responde también: «Mucho gusto».
mucho gusto is what you say the first time you meet someone, and the other person says it straight back. Encantado (from a man) and encantada (from a woman) mean the same thing and are a shade more formal — learn them whole for now; the -o / -a ending is the subject of level 3.

Ahora hablas tú, en voz alta. Con una persona nueva: «Perdón, señora. Me llamo … Mucho gusto». Con un favor: «Gracias». Y la respuesta: «De nada».
Practise the whole courtesy circuit out loud: open with perdón, introduce yourself, close with mucho gusto. Then say gracias five times today in real life and listen for the answer — de nada, no hay de qué, or in Mexico simply con gusto.
