Una amiga y un profesor
Diego, is she Marta?
Yes, that's Marta. She's a friend.
Hi, Marta! How are you?
I'm fine, thanks. And you?
Fine, thanks. And him? Is he a student?
No, he's a teacher. His name is Pablo Ortega.
Pleased to meet you, Mr. Ortega.
Pleased to meet you, Ana. Marta is a student and I'm a teacher.
Explicación · Explanation
«Él» es un hombre, «ella» es una mujer. Los dos van con «es»: él es profesor, ella es estudiante. Usted también va con «es».
Now the third person. él is 'he', ella is 'she', and both take exactly the form of ser you met last lesson for usted: es. So one form, three subjects — él es, ella es, usted es. As always the pronoun is optional (es profesor says it all); put él or ella in when you are picking one person out of two, the way Ana does.
Una palabra de persona tiene dos formas: amigo para un hombre, amiga para una mujer. Profesor cambia también: profesora.
Words for people come in pairs. The commonest pattern swaps a final -o for -a: amigo becomes amiga. A word ending in a consonant usually just adds -a: profesor / profesora, señor / señora. And a few never change at all — estudiante is one, as you saw in the last lesson. The form follows the real person, not the speaker.
«Él» con tilde es una persona. «El» de «el señor Ortega» es otra palabra. La tilde marca la diferencia.
Two tiny words, one tilde apart: él (with the accent) is the pronoun 'he'; el (without it) is the little word in el señor Ortega, el nombre, el apellido. Spanish uses this trick on a handful of pairs — you have already met sí and si — and level 8 gathers them all under the name tilde diacrítica.

Ahora hablas tú, en voz alta. Una persona de tu casa: «Él es … Es …». Otra persona: «Ella es … Es …». Y una amiga: «Se llama … Es una amiga».
Point at two photographs and describe the people out loud, one with él es and one with ella es — name plus role, exactly as Diego does. Then say the same thing twice more without the pronoun (es profesor, es estudiante) and notice that nothing is lost.
