Explicación · Explanation

«¿Cómo estás?» pregunta por el estado de una persona. La respuesta: «Estoy bien». O: «Estoy regular». Y después, «gracias».

estar is the verb for how you are at this moment: estoy (I), estás (you, to a friend), está (he, she, or usted). Answer estoy bien if all is well and regular if it is not — regular is a real answer, meaning so-so, and it invites the other person to ask more. Adding gracias is normal, not formal.

Con un amigo: «¿Cómo estás?». Con la señora López: «¿Cómo está usted?». La forma del verbo cambia: estás, está.

Two questions, one meaning. ¿Cómo estás? goes to friends, classmates and family; ¿Cómo está usted? goes to strangers, older people and anyone at work. Where Spain would use tú freely, Colombia and Costa Rica often keep usted even between friends — when in doubt, use usted and let the other person invite you to tú.

Después de una respuesta, la pregunta vuelve: «¿Y tú?» con un amigo, «¿Y usted?» con respeto.

Hand the question back with ¿Y tú? or ¿Y usted? — two words that keep a conversation alive. Notice that bien answers 'how', so it never changes shape for a man or a woman: estoy bien for everyone.

Unir las dos columnas. Match the Spanish with the English.
Ordenar: «How are you?», con respeto. Arrange the words: the polite question.
— ¿Cómo está usted? — Estoy bien, ________. Complete: '…thank you.'

Ponlo en práctica · Use it

Ahora hablas tú, en voz alta. Con un amigo: «¡Hola! ¿Cómo estás?». Con la señora López: «Buenos días. ¿Cómo está usted?». Y la respuesta: «Estoy bien, gracias. ¿Y tú?».

Run the whole exchange out loud twice — once with tú, once with usted — greeting, question, answer, and the question handed back. Then answer honestly for yourself today: estoy bien or estoy regular.
