Level 13 · Lesson 1

El español del mundo
Spanish across the world

El voseo, ustedes frente a vosotros, el seseo y el yeísmo, y el léxico de cada país.

Voseo, ustedes vs vosotros, seseo and yeísmo, and the words that change from country to country.

Ya lo sabes · You already know this

Has terminado doce niveles. Ya puedes leer, escribir y discutir en español. Pero el español que has aprendido es una norma culta general, y en el mundo real hay casi quinientos millones de hablantes repartidos en más de veinte países. En Buenos Aires te dirán «¿vos qué querés?»; en Bogotá, «¿usted qué quiere?»; en Madrid, «¿tú qué quieres?». Las tres son correctas.

You have finished twelve levels and can read, write and argue in Spanish. But what you learned is one general educated norm, and the real language belongs to nearly five hundred million people across more than twenty countries. Buenos Aires will ask you ¿vos qué querés?, Bogotá ¿usted qué quiere?, Madrid ¿tú qué quieres? All three are correct, and this chapter is about not being surprised by any of them.

Las reglas · The rules

En gran parte de América, el pronombre de confianza no es tú sino vos, con formas verbales propias: es el voseo.
Regla 1
vos hablás, vos comés, vos vivís, vos sos, vos tenés, vos podés, vos querés.
Across much of America the familiar pronoun is not tú but vos, with its own verb forms — and it is the standard, prestige usage in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.

Las formas del voseo son fáciles: se toma el infinitivo, se le quita la -r y se le añade una -s, con la tilde en la última sílaba. hablar → hablás. comer → comés. vivir → vivís. Solo ser es irregular: vos sos. No hay diptongación, así que vos podés y vos querés, nunca «vos puedes».

The forms are easy to build: take the infinitive, drop the -r, add -s, and stress the last syllable. hablar → hablás, comer → comés, vivir → vivís. Only ser is irregular: vos sos. And because the stress moves to the ending, the stem never diphthongises — vos podés and vos querés, never vos puedes.

El imperativo del voseo pierde la -d final y lleva la tilde en la última sílaba.
Regla 2
hablá, comé, viví, tené, vení, salí, poné, andá; de ser, sé.
The voseo imperative drops the final -d of the peninsular form and stresses the last syllable: hablá, comé, viví, tené, vení, poné, andá.
Fuera de España, el plural de tú y de usted es siempre ustedes; vosotros no se usa.
Regla 3
España: vosotros habláis. América: ustedes hablan — con amigos y con desconocidos por igual.
Outside Spain there is only one plural 'you': ustedes, always with third-person plural verbs, whether you are speaking to friends or to strangers. The vosotros forms you learned in level 10 are peninsular only.

Esto simplifica mucho las cosas en América: donde España distingue vosotros habláis de ustedes hablan, América dice ustedes hablan en los dos casos. Si aprendiste las formas de vosotros, no las pierdas — las necesitarás para leer a autores españoles y para viajar a España.

This simplifies matters in America: where Spain separates vosotros habláis from ustedes hablan, America uses ustedes hablan for both. Do not discard the vosotros forms, though — you need them to read Spanish authors and to be in Spain.

El seseo pronuncia c y z como s; el yeísmo pronuncia ll como y. Ambos son mayoritarios en el mundo hispanohablante.
Regla 4
Con seseo, casa y caza suenan igual. Con yeísmo, cayó y calló suenan igual.
Seseo merges the sounds of c/z with s; yeísmo merges ll with y. Both are the majority pronunciation worldwide, and neither is a defect — but both create homophones, which is why spelling has to be learned separately.

Aquí está la consecuencia práctica: si hablas con seseo, no puedes deducir la ortografía del sonido. casa y caza suenan igual pero se escriben distinto. Por eso el nivel 8 fue tan importante: las reglas de acentuación y de ortografía no dependen de tu pronunciación.

Here is the practical consequence. If you speak with seseo you cannot deduce spelling from sound: casa and caza are pronounced alike and written differently. That is exactly why level 8 mattered — the accentuation and spelling rules hold whatever your accent.

El léxico cotidiano cambia de un país a otro, aunque la gramática sea la misma.
Regla 5
coche / carro / auto; ordenador / computadora; zumo / jugo; patata / papa; móvil / celular; autobús / camión / guagua / colectivo.
Everyday vocabulary shifts from country to country even though the grammar does not. None of these is more correct than the others.

Paso a paso · Step by step

Una misma pregunta en tres normas
  1. ¿Tú qué quieres tomar? — norma peninsular y de buena parte de América — tuteo
  2. ¿Vos qué querés tomar? — voseo rioplatense — querer sin diptongo, tilde final

What is the voseo form of tú tienes?
En Lima, ¿cómo se dice «vosotros habláis»? How would that be said in Lima?
El imperativo de voseo de «venir» es ________. Give the voseo imperative of venir.
Relaciona cada palabra con su equivalente en otra variedad. Match each word with its equivalent elsewhere.
Con seseo, ¿qué par de palabras suena igual? Which pair sounds identical under seseo?
¿Cuál de estas afirmaciones es correcta? Which statement is correct?

Úsalo · Use it

Ahora haz esto. Busca un periódico argentino y otro mexicano y lee la misma noticia en los dos: verás que la gramática es idéntica y que cambian el trato y algunas palabras. Después di en voz alta tres frases con vos y las mismas tres con tú. Elige luego una variedad y quédate en ella al hablar: lo importante no es cuál elijas, sino no mezclarlas dentro de una misma conversación.

Now do this. Find an Argentine newspaper and a Mexican one and read the same story in both: the grammar will be identical and only the address forms and a few words will move. Then say three sentences aloud with vos and the same three with tú. Finally pick one variety and stay inside it when you speak — what matters is not which you choose but that you do not mix them mid-conversation.
