Explicación · Explanation
Estas cuatro palabras colocan los hechos en una línea. Antes mira hacia el pasado, luego y después miran hacia adelante, y entonces marca el momento exacto: «Antes estudié, después comí, luego trabajé. Entonces llegó Marta».
These four little words are the rails your story runs on. antes points backwards from the moment you are talking about; luego and después point forwards (next, afterwards); entonces marks the very moment — at that point, just then. String them together and a list of verbs becomes a day: Antes estudié, después comí, luego trabajé. Entonces llegó Marta. They can open the sentence or sit after the verb: Descansé después.
Antes y después son adverbios solos: «Descansé antes». Con un sustantivo o con un infinitivo llevan de: «antes de la cena», «después de comer». Luego y entonces van directamente con el verbo: «Luego trabajé», «Entonces llegó Marta».
antes and después work in two ways. On their own they are adverbs and stand alone: Descansé antes. Después cantamos. But when you name the other event, they need de before it — before a noun (antes de la cena, después del trabajo) or before an infinitive, never a conjugated verb (antes de comer, después de llegar a casa). Notice that the Spanish infinitive does the work of the English -ing form: después de comer is after eating. luego and entonces normally go straight to the verb: Luego trabajé. Across much of America you will also hear luego de comer for después de comer; both are correct, and después de is the safe choice everywhere.
Entonces tiene dos oficios. En una historia significa «en aquel momento»: «Entonces llegó Marta». En una respuesta significa «así pues»: —No trabajé ayer. —Entonces descansaste.
entonces does two jobs and context tells them apart. Inside a story it is temporal — at that moment, and that is how Beto uses it: Entonces llegó Marta. In a reply it is consequential — so, in that case: No trabajé ayer. Entonces descansaste. English happens to use then for both jobs too, which makes entonces easy to remember and easy to overuse; luego is the better word for simple next.

Cuenta tu día de ayer en voz alta con tres frases: «Por la mañana ________. Después ________. Luego ________». Al terminar, di una frase con antes de y una con después de.
Tell yesterday out loud in three sentences, one adverb each: Por la mañana estudié. Después comí. Luego trabajé. Then add two more that name the second event — one with antes de and one with después de, each followed by an infinitive: antes de comer, después de llegar a casa. Keep the de; it is the piece learners drop.
