En «querer» la e de la raíz cambia a ie: quiero, quieres, quiere, quieren. En «poder» la o cambia a ue: puedo, puedes, puede, pueden. «Dormir» hace duermo y «jugar» hace juego.

A large group of very common verbs changes the vowel inside the stem when the stress falls on it. querer opens its e into ie — quiero, quieres, quiere, quieren — and poder opens its o into ue: puedo, puedes, puede, pueden. The endings themselves are the ordinary -er endings you already know; only the vowel of the stem moves. dormir does the same with o (duermo, duermes, duerme, duermen), and jugar is the single verb in the language that turns u into ue: juego, juegas, juega, juegan.

El cambio nunca llega a nosotros ni a vosotros: queremos, queréis; podemos, podéis; dormimos, dormís; jugamos, jugáis. Ahí la raíz vuelve a la vocal normal.

Now the part that saves you: the change never touches the nosotros and vosotros forms. queremos, podemos, dormimos, jugamos all keep the plain stem, and so do queréis, podéis, dormís, jugáis. Written out as a paradigm, the four changed forms sit at the top and bottom and the two plain ones sit in the middle — which is why teachers draw a boot around them. The reason is stress: those two forms stress the ending, not the stem.

Detrás de «querer» y de «poder» va un infinitivo: quiero bailar, puedes cantar, queremos jugar. El segundo verbo no cambia nunca.

Both verbs like to carry another verb behind them, and that second verb stays in the plain infinitive form: quiero bailar, puedes cantar, queremos comer. Nothing goes between the two. This pair alone will get you a long way — querer for what you want and poder for what is possible, both softened by a question mark: ¿quieres…? ¿puedes…?
