A life story is built out of two tenses working side by side. The preterite carries the events, each one closed and dated, one after another: nació, creció, estudió, trabajó, murió. The imperfect paints everything that has no edges — what things were like, what she used to do, how many brothers she had: era pobre, vivía en el campo, tenía cinco hermanos. Neither tense can do the other's job, which is why a life story needs both.

When you need to step further back — to something already over before the point you have reached — the pluperfect does it: Cuando llegó a la ciudad, ya había trabajado diez años. The new words all measure time. durante is during or for, and it stands in front of a stretch: durante su infancia, durante tres años, durante la cena. época is a period seen from outside, an era in history or in a life. And the two ages: la infancia is childhood, la juventud is youth — both feminine, both with la.

There is your template: six sentences, five preterites, one durante and a date at each end. Change the names and the dates and you have your own family in Spanish. Then add a single imperfect — Era una época difícil — and the paragraph stops being a list and starts being a person telling a story.

Ponlo en práctica · Use it

Tell it out loud, six sentences long, and keep the preterites marching: nació, creció, estudió, trabajó. Then go back and slip one imperfect into the middle — Era una época difícil, No había escuela en el campo — and hear the story open out. If someone in the room speaks Spanish, tell it to them; if not, tell it to the mirror twice, and the second time will already be faster.
